When we talk about the magic of virgin coconut oil, Lauric Acid usually steals the spotlight. But, nestled right behind Lauric Acid and supporting its efforts is Myristic Acid, a saturated fatty acid that make up roughly 16-20% of virgin coconut oil’s composition. While it might not be a household name, its contributions to skin health are quietly powerful.
Natural cleansing agent
Myristic Acid is prized in skincare formulations for its cleansing and foaming properties. It’s often used in facial cleansers and soaps because it helps lift away dirt, oil, and impurities without stripping the skin’s natural moisture barrier. In virgin coconut oil, it works synergistically with other fatty acids to gently purify the skin while leaving it soft and supple.
Enhances absorption
Unlike heavier long-chain fatty acids, Myristic Acid has a medium-chain structure that allows it to penetrate the skin more efficiently. This means it can deliver hydration and nutrients deeper into the skin layers, making virgin coconut oil more effective as a moisturizer. It’s especially helpful for dry or rough patches – like elbows, knees, or post-sun exposure areas.

Emollient & Conditioning Properties
Myristic Acid acts as an emollient, helping to smooth and soften the skin. It improves texture and supports the lipid matrix that keeps skin resilient and hydrated. This makes it a great ally for mature or weather-exposed skin, where maintaining elasticity is key. There is a bonus: it also contributes to the silky texture of coconut oil, making it feel luxurious on application!
Mild Sensitivity Risk
While generally well-tolerated, Myristic Acid can cause mild irritation in very sensitive skin types – especially when used in high concentration in synthetic products. The California Learning Resource Center defines a synthetic product as “{…} materials or substances engineered through chemical processes rather than derived directly from naturally occurring sources.” When you buy products from a store, many will be produced using some type of synthetic processing. In natural virgin coconut oil, however, it’s naturally balanced with other fatty acids, reducing the likelihood of adverse reactions. That said though, remember that patch testing is your friend!
Myristic Acid might not be the headline act but it’s a vital part of virgin coconut oil’s skincare symphony. From cleansing to conditioning, it plays a versatile role that enhances the oil’s overall performance.
